5-4-16 The Strumbellas at The Box last night!

Simon Ward of The Strumbellas Performs at The Box in NYC on May 3rd, 2-16

Thanks to BB Gun Press, I attended a special invite-only concert last night, played by The Strumbellas at The Box! The Canadian band was kicking off a summer tour in support of their new album HOPE. A spirited 6 person alt/indie band, they had catchy songs and were fun to watch!

Right away, I noticed they had an ease with the audience (I got the sense the audience was mostly made up of music industry folks who had been involved with putting out their new record HOPE). Lead singer Simon Ward was busting self-deprecating jokes. He joked his bandmates and he were some of the best looking people on the planet. They also told us they had eaten at Katz’s Deli right before the concert and it had been a heavy meal. The violinist Isabel Ritchie added it had been real mistake to eat like that right before the show. Then Dave, the keyboardist, asked if there was, perhaps, a medical center nearby. Mr. Ward spoke about how pleased and excited the band was to be playing New York City because it was “one of the greatest cities on the planet”!

The Strumbellas played a bunch of songs which had catchy, anthemic choruses and featured a violin too! Their music was an interesting mix of genres: rock, electropop with a country/folk flavour. If you like Rubbbucket you’ll probably really like them!

The band were all dressed in charming country outfits (except for Dave the keyboardist who was sporting an 80’s look). Awesomely, Mr. Ward was even barefoot! He made grand gestures as he performed, which brought to mind a marching band conductor and a baptist minister.

During their last song of the night, characters from their Spirits music video came out and performed.

Here are my photos from the show:
