6-27-16 New York City Street Photographer Bill Cunningham
Sometimes I only get the opportunity to learn about a photographer on the day he or she passes away. It’s a weird experience – discovering an artist’s life work because of their obituary. I’m both elated to learn about an artist I never knew existed, and at the same time, I feel sad I never knew about them when they were walking the Earth.
So it is with New York Times photographer Bill Cunningham. Sadly, I wasn’t aware of him while he was alive, but today I’m obsessed to read all about his career and his work!
Here’s an article he wrote in 2002 about his career.
I learned there’s a documentary about him too: Bill Cunningham New York.
I’d also like to express my condolences to his family. What a wonderful thing that he will always be remembered – for example, in 2009 he was named a “living landmark” by the New York Landmarks Conservancy. I didn’t even know they could do that!
I hope you will enjoy learning about Mr. Cunningham as much as I do!
