7-10-17 Album Review: Elephant EP by In The Valley Below

Hey readers, I just had the chance to listen to an advance of the five song EP “Elephant EP” by dream pop duo In The Valley Below. It’s a melodic journey through ’80s tinged sonic landscapes. Each song features beautiful vocals by both Angela Gail Mattson (vocals, keyboards) and Jeffrey Jacob Mendel (vocals, guitar), their voices floating over electronic backgrounds. I particularly liked their dreamy duet on the title track “Elephant”.

I first learned about Canadian musician Jay Arner from his beautifully haunting electronic album Homemade Ship (Remix) with vocals by songwriter Rose Melberg. He was very kind when I emailed him recently expressing my love of that album, so I wanted to share his latest work with all of you. Take a listen when you have the chance. Thanks to BB Gun Press I was lucky enough to be at the sold out launch of Kristin Kontrol‘s summer tour at Baby’s All Right. Starchild opened the show- a charismatic musician paying homage to Prince. Next, Kristin Kontrol took the stage and the crowd buzzed with excitement. Lead singer Dee Dee (of Dum Dum Girls fame) was dressed in a silver space outfit and held the audience in the palm of her hand for the duration of the show. During breaks in songs, there was even silence as the audience marveled at Dee Dee. This is her first project after the end of the Dum Dum Girls.
